Job flows in Swedish manufacturing 1972 - 1996

چکیده

This paper deals with the heterogeneous employment outcome at the plant level in Swedish manufacturing over the period 1972-96. Non-negligible gross flows of jobs is found to be a pronounced feature in Swedish manufacturing, but as compared to results on U.S. data, the average pace of job reallocation has not been as high. However, masked behind low averages are periods of largescale job reallocation and, in particular, we find that job reallocation exhibits a countercyclical movement. Little of the observed heterogeneity in the plant-level employment outcome can be explained by easily observable characteristics of the plant. Instead most job reallocation takes place within narrowly defined sectors of the manufacturing sector. Furthermore, the role for idiosyncrasies in explaining the plant-level employment outcome becomes increasingly important in times of contraction. We find no evidence supporting the hypothesis that large wage compression explains high job reallocation rates. Investigating the covariance structure of job reallocation, we instead find that, beside the net employment growth, the growth in productivity is the single most influential factor. These findings, we like to believe, are consistent with theoretical models, which stress that the process of growth and technology adoption involves a great deal of experimentation. Accordingly, we find that these reallocative activities have been important in accounting for the long-run growth in productivity. † The author gratefully acknowledges valuable comments from Julia Lane, Anders Forslund and the participants at the seminar at the Trade Union Institute for Economic Research (FIEF). Job Creation and Job Destruction in a Transition Economy: Ownership, Firm Size, and Gross Job Flows in Polish Manufacturing

Comprehensive firm-level data for Polish manufacturing show that in state-owned firms the large drop in net employment since the start of the transition in 1990 has been driven by a jump in the job destruction rate; job creation, by contrast, is located disproportionately in the private sector. Small firms are more dynamic than large firms, but even after controlling for size, private firms hav...

Aggregate Job Creation, Job Destruction and Job Turnover in the Irish Manufacturing Sector*

Using an annual employment survey data set we construct aggregate job flow rates for the Ir ish manufacturing sector for the period 1974 to 1994. We report the existence of simul taneous job creation and job destruction, inducing job turnover well above that necessary to accommodate net employment changes at the aggregate or even very refined sectoral level, over the entire sample period. This...

Sources of Employment Change in the Tenth District

C jobs is often the primary goal of economic development policy. To help target their job creation efforts, policymakers generally examine net changes in the official employment figures. But relying solely on net changes can often hide important gross changes that influence the dynamics of job creation and destruction. Knowing where jobs are currently being created and destroyed in an economy c...

JOB CREATION AND JOB DESTRUCTION IN GREAT BRITAIN IN THE 1980s

Using data from the Workplace Industrial Relations Surveys of 1980, 1984, and 1990, the authors investigate processes of job creation and job destruction in Britain. They find that rates of employment growth, job creation, and job destruction were higher at the end of the 1980s than at the beginning. Bothjob creation and job destruction were extremely concentrated: about 50% of each was account...

Inter - Industry Wage Differentials and Job Flows

The paper explores the relationship between job flows and wages in the U.S. manufacturing sector, where wage differentials for seemingly identical workers and job reallocation rates are shown to be negatively correlated across 3-digit industries. High wage industries have the lowest turnover of jobs, offering more secure employment opportunities. In a regression of wage differentials on industr...
